Normal lithium-ion batteries use graphite anodes. This material can hold only a limited amount of charged lithium particles. The graphite anodes’ limited capacity is the only responsible for the relatively brief charge life of lithium-ion batteries. Replacing the graphite anodes with silicon nanowires would increase the battery’s charge storage capacity of around 8-900%.. So your iphone, ipod, laptop and technological instruments would lasts longer!
The new technology, developed through research led by Yi Cui, assistant professor of materials science and engineering, produces 10 times the amount of electricity of existing lithium-ion, known as Li-ion, batteries. A laptop that now runs on battery for two hours could operate for 20 hours, a boon to ocean-hopping business travelers!
